New Poems – Love Ephemera

Sapporo

we stood
in a storm
at the beach,
stared up
at a Ferris wheel
spinning
round and round
through soft
falling
ice.

nearby
we found
a 100 Yen shop
where most things
were more.

later
you would
mistake
“excuse me”
for “thankyou”
at a department store
and I would
smile enthusiastically
and bow
my head.

Consulate

it is like
a gaol in here,
all stainless steel
and security doors.

there are
touches of class –
the giveaways –
leather chairs,
polished marble
and official silence.

an Australian flag
falls limply
against cold
Tokyo
sky.

we are dressed
in black
and you are
reading a magazine
beautifully
as
I write.

and
it is ten years
and eight months
and ten days
since we met.

Ikebukuro

tired eyes
and a tall can
of Sapporo.
we lie close
on tatami –
it’s dark by 5:30.

and you
are sleeping
now
and I am alone.

and I can still remember
the way
your feet moved
in your shoes,
and that
you were wearing
faded grey
corduroy.

I can remember
that your eyes
were so incredibly bright
and how
I felt nervous
when you smiled,
and
that it was cold
and clear
and still
as we walked
from the station.

and we were
eighteen then
and we are
nearly thirty now,
and tonight
I can remember
all kinds of things.

Arashiyama

the monkeys
are pretty much
what you expect.
there are
the crazy eyes
and the screaming
and the tumbling
through trees.

at around midday
a man
who looked
like Elvis
took our photo
then
a monkey
left his footprint
on my shoe.

early
in the afternoon
there
was a dramatic chase
involving many
monkeys.

and a fat man
with a visor
pointed
and giggled
loudly.

as
did we.

Toshima City Office

our katakana
was traced,
our documents
translated.

it was
thirty degrees
in there,
the heating
stuck on –
bureaucrats
sweating
in the last month
of winter.

and we took
a number
and sat
and waited
and blushed
under fluoro lighting.

and a while
later
we had certificates
and our friends
took a photo.
